Solar Plus has a brand new hybrid solar system utilizing PV, batteries, generators, and automation. It has its own approval process by KIUC to take you off-grid, but use the grid as backup. Our new off-grid systems allow you to put in as large a solar PV system as you need for your energy consumption or budget allows.
We use automation to prioritize the use of your new system and how your energy flows through the microgrid. Our system allows you to add more PV or storage as your needs change, always with the grid as the back of the line. Solar Plus is the first company on Kauai to use this technology.
How Microgrids Work
A microgrid refers to distributed energy resources and loads that can be operated in a controlled, coordinated way; they can be connected to the main power grid, operate in “islanded” mode or be completely off-grid.
You can convert any current PV system to off-grid! It works by taking energy from your solar panels and storing the energy in batteries. Due to our utility’s current energy buyback program and the reduced rate they offer for excess power, storing your power for later use provides a greater financial benefit.

Sol-Ark Microgrid Inverters
Six years ago, founder Doug Phillips, stumbled across an upstart Hybrid-Inverter manufacturer at the Solar Power International trade show. The company claimed that its clean-sheet design was not only more efficient than its competitors but had the ability to operate in true “zero-export” or “self-supply”. These features were an industry first for residential-scale inverters, and have since allowed us to perfect our residential microgrid model.
On top of this, the company maintained that its control suite offered more options for customization and that its team of engineers would continue to develop and improve the product with over-the-air updates. This upstart turned powerhouse is known as Sol-Ark, and they have exceeded even our loftiest expectations. Our partnership has evolved as Solar Plus does beta testing and repair for Sol-Ark in the State of Hawaii.
